Today, we traveled to Philadelphia from Boston. Even though we had an early start, it was great to have a day to relax on the bus and make it through 5 states!
After a couple hours of driving, we stopped for an early lunch in New Haven, Connecticut. It was nice to explore the area and get a feel for Yale’s campus. I was particularly struck by the campus’ urban setting, as it took a little while for me to realize that we were even in a “college town.”
As we continued the trip down to Philadelphia, we made another stop, this time at Asbury Park, a beach and boardwalk in New Jersey. The boardwalk was very cute, with lots of souvenir shops, food stands and restaurants. I also enjoyed exploring the clothing shops and walking on the beach. I really liked that we were able to take some time during the day to be outside, as this stop provided a nice break from sitting on the bus.
When we arrived in Philadelphia, we were given free time to explore South Street and grab dinner. We also learned about the neighborhood’s gentrification process. Billy even said that had this been a few years ago, he never would have let a group have free time on South Street. However, today it’s a very nice area and was a perfect location for us to have dinner, with many different food options. I also really enjoyed exploring the street’s unique shops.
Today was an overall relaxing day that I really needed. While we only spent the evening in Philadelphia, I look forward to further exploring the city tomorrow.
